Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase II to III, ca. 250 to 550 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel with a slightly rounded but stable base, a spherical body with a curved shoulder, a stirrup-shaped handle, and a gently corseted spout with a thick rim. Painted with red-brown pigment atop a cream-hued ground, the vessel presents a pair of large, right-facing crawfish (also crawdads or crayfish) as they swim along with their whiskers projecting in front of their segmented carapace, a petite cheliped beneath the head, and a frilled tail fin. Size: 6" Diameter x 8.25" H (15.2 cm x 21 cm)

  • Condition: Professionally repaired with restoration, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Light abrasions to body, handle, and spout, with touch-up painting over many red-brown areas, and small chips to spout rim. Nice remains of crustacean motifs. Old inventory label beneath body.
