Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Moche IV (Classic Period), ca. 550 to 650 CE. A charming pottery stirrup vessel showcasing black-on-cream fineline decoration of a slithering serpent on the body and a circle of 6 fruits - perhaps ulluchu - on the top. Sitting upon an ovoid foot, the vessel presents a globular body with a conical projection rising from the center terminating in a closed top and a stirrup spout arching at the side. The Mochica artisans embellished many vessels with serpent/snake iconography, probably inspired by their annual skin shedding and the regenerative quality and renewal that that practice symbolizes. However, the elegant, undulating form of these creatures is exceptional. Size: 7.1" W x 9.1" H (18 cm x 23.1 cm)

Provenance: private Rochester, Michigan, USA collection; ex-Stein collection, before 2000
