Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase IV, ca. 450 to 650 CE. An interesting, hand-built pottery vessel of a spherical form resting on a flat base. The cream-hued ground is highly burnished and adorned with burgundy fineline decorations that create a hunting scene on each half of the body. The scene depicts a warrior who wears a four-panel tunic, holds attenuated spears and perhaps an atlatl, and dons a tumi-topped headdress. He is shown running after a canine-like animal, perhaps a coyote, after striking it in the back of its neck with one of his weapons. The animal has a downward gaze along with an open mouth and drooping tongue. The vessel is topped with an arching, stirrup-shaped handle with a cylindrical spout rising high from the middle. Size: 5.8" Diameter x 10.4" H (14.7 cm x 26.4 cm)
