Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Moche, ca. 100 to 500 CE. A hand-built pottery water dipper or corn popper (called a canchero) depicting a fierce jaguar warrior amongst a field of serpents, his tail itself a serpent, while extending his tongue towards a severed trophy head held in his hand. A curved, conical handle emanates from the top for ease of use, and the body of the vessel is adorned in a cream-hued pigment. Size: 3.5" L x 6.1" W x 9.6" H (8.9 cm x 15.5 cm x 24.4 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010; ex-Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany
