Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, 300 to 400 CE. A mold-made bi-chrome cream-on-red vessel depicting Ai Apec, the chief deity of the Moche people. Notice that the god is presented with his characteristically wild feline fangs and a pair of sinuous serpents slithering around his head with their visages over his bulging eyeballs. What an expressive countenance delineated in low to high relief - those prominent almond-shaped eyes that seem to be engaged in a trance, that relatively naturalistic protruding nose with a white rectangular applique just above the bridge, his snarling grimace with enormous fangs protruding from his wide mouth, and his large ears with bas relief plugs. This vessel is writhing with life - albeit that of the supernatural being! Size: 5.125" L x 6.375" W x 5.375" H (13 cm x 16.2 cm x 13.7 cm)
