Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 100 to 600 CE. A large and sturdy copper tumi depicting a lord or deity of the harvest standing on an integral square platform. The figure stands proudly and is dressed in elaborate regalia including a grand sun-disc headdress, large earspools, a large beaded necklace, and a fanciful belt. He holds a branch staff in his right hand and some fruits or nuts in his left. His body is part human and part flora, denoted by the sprouting plant shoots extending from his torso. A tall stirrup vessel, typical of Moche-style pottery, rests at his feet. This tumi exhibits unbelievable detail and rich Moche symbolism, characteristic of a people who subscribed to animism and believed in the supernatural spirits of nature. Size: 6.75" H (17.1 cm); 7.5" H (19 cm) on included custom stand.

The tumi was sometimes used to sacrifice llamas to the Sun. The Paracas people, also from the Andes, used the tumi for trepanation, thought to open the mind to religious enlightenment; it is unknown if the Moche did similar, but they may have. In modern Peru, a tumi on the wall is a symbol of good luck.
