Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 400 to 800 CE. A haunting copper mask which is hammered into a flat sheet and presented with stylized facial details in repousse. Almond-shaped eyes, a shapely nose with flared nostrils, puffy cheeks, full lips surrounding an open mouth, and perforated, bar-shaped ears define the mask, and tiny perforations drilled around the edges show where the mask was sewn onto a mummy bundle. Elite members of Moche society were buried with copper masks, while gold and silver were reserved for royalty. Size: 7.2" W x 5.95" H (18.3 cm x 15.1 cm); 6.875" H (17.5 cm) on included custom stand.
