Description:

Pre-Columbian, North-Central Coast Peru, late Moche / Chimu culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A sizable, mold-formed, and highly-burnished pottery vessel in the form of a llama head. The head is defined by a veristic snout which tapers to thick lips and flared nostrils, impressed ovoid eyes within raised lids, a pair of tall ears, and a raised rim surrounding the cavernous interior. Faded pigmentation covers the entire vessel, with red and white covering the snout and nose with a thin black stripe above and black on half of each eye, all atop a cream-hued ground. Size: 9.25" L x 7.6" W x 5.25" H (23.5 cm x 19.3 cm x 13.3 cm).

Provenance: ex-John Rich collection, California, USA. John Rich was a notable Hollywood producer/director.

  • Condition: Restoration to both ears with overpainting atop new material. Minor chips to rim, snout, and base, with fading to original pigmentation, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits and traces of original pigmentation throughout. Old inventory label on base.
