Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Moche III / IV, Ca 350 to 600 CE. Fabulous corn-popper, so called obviously due to its shape and actually used as a water dipper. Decorated in fine-line technique of red/brown over tan. On the reverse, a standing lord is shown in full battle regalia with vulture mask, multi-tiered helmet, wings upon his back holding a feathered shield in his right hand and large ornate mace head in his left. To each side is a thorny cactus, with circles and bird behind him, four panels of circles and temple steps above him complete the scene. On the obverse there are two reptilian warriors with long serpentine tails, human legs, long extended tongues, each holding a shield. Superb artistry! 11-1/2"L x 7-1/2"D.
