Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase V, ca. 600 to 800 CE. An intriguing mold-formed brownware pottery drinking cup with a conical stem, a bulbous body with a tapered shoulder, and a thin rim surrounding the deep basin. The highly burnished portrait vessel features the head of an imposing figure with almond-shaped eyes, a petite nose, thin lips, broad ears, and a tall, smooth forehead. The hollow handle is filled with small percussive balls that create a rattling sound when jostled. Vessels like this were often placed in tombs as offerings for the deceased. Size: 5.375" W x 6.6" H (13.7 cm x 16.8 cm).
