Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase III, ca. 400 to 600 CE. An enticing stirrup vessel built from brownware pottery that features an adorable lizard or salamander seated atop a hemispherical lower body. The lizard rears its tNeed More Infpo apered head up towards the viewer and peers forward with inlaid nacre eyes, and additional nacre inlays line its back all the way down its tail. A stirrup-shaped handle and cylindrical spout project from the creature's back, and high burnishing marks imbue the surfaces with a reflective luster. Size: 3.5" W x 7.25" H (8.9 cm x 18.4 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

  • Condition: Small chips to some nacre inlays, with abrasions and minor nicks to base, lizard, and spout, and light encrustations in scattered areas, otherwise intact and very good. Great preservation to brown color and nacre inlays. Old inventory label beneath base. Four TL drill holes: two beneath base and one beneath each front leg.
