Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase III-IV, ca. 200 CE. An impressive blackware stirrup vessel depicting a deity or transitioning shaman with both human and stingray features. Moche artists depicted powerful sea predators like stingrays, sharks, and killer whales as they were associated with warfare and military might. In this example, the upper section of the vessel depicts the threatening form of a stingray, and the lower section depicts a human visage. The stingray was sensibly feared by Andean humankind as its dorsal spine became a lethal weapon when this sea creature was provoked. In addition, stingray spines which had a sharp edge and poisonous venom were highly valued as bloodletters used during sacrificial rituals. The bloodletting practice was believed to sustain the cosmos. Hence the stingray embodied a characteristic Pre-Columbian duality as it was both deadly and at the same time life affirming. Marvelous for its displayed technique, highly symbolic iconography, and overall artistry, this unusual stingray/human effigy vessel is quite special. Size: 8.75" L x 9.75" W x 7.25" H (22.2 cm x 24.8 cm x 18.4 cm)

According to scholars, the Moche fisherman relied upon the plentiful fishing grounds of the Humboldt Current and thus Moche artists could closely observe many species of fish. Moche artists depicted powerful sea predators like sharks and killer whales as well as stingray, manta ray, sawfish, and the Pacific angel shark.
