Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase IV to Phase V, ca. 500 to 850 CE. A wonderful mold-made pottery vessel of globular form with a planar base and a cylindrical stirrup spout that doubles as a handle. Boasting hues of creamy beige and vibrant burnt sienna, the charming vessel is adorned with the image of a monkey, its body painted on the dish and its head rising from the top with the stirrup spout stretching from the back of its head to its posterior. The head of the curious creature displays an expressive visage of wide, target-motif eyes, a round snout, and an open mouth showing a row of 4 sharp teeth, all flanked by a pair of perky ears with large, annular earspools. His front limbs are bent over one side of the vessel, as his hind legs and sinuous, coiling tail are shown at on the other. Size: 7.25" in diameter x 9.75" H (18.4 cm x 24.8 cm)
