Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase III, ca. 350 to 550 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel with a protruding annular foot, a spherical body, and a stirrup-shaped handle surmounted by a gently corseted spout. Highly burnished and painted in hues of honey yellow and russet red, the body displays a quartet of highly stylized lizards with pinched heads, plump bodies adorned with zigzagging stripes, slender tails, and enormous limbs with lengthy claws. Each reptilian creature is separated by a series of 4 vertical bands, and the entirety of the handle and spout are painted in a solid layer of russet pigment. Size: 6" Diameter x 8.8" H (15.2 cm x 22.4 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report is available for $50 to the buyer. Please contact us to request.

  • Condition: Stabilization to fissure beneath foot. Minor chips to foot cause vessel to sit upright but at a slight but stable angle. Light abrasions to body, handle, and spout, with fading to pigment in scattered areas. Nice preservation to original pigment and decorative motifs. Old inventory label beneath body. TL drill holes beneath foot and within top of spout.
