Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Moche, Phase I, ca. 100 BCE to 300 CE. A fascinating pottery stirrup vessel in the form of a seated shaman holding a petite vessel on one shoulder. Crowned by a headdress resembling a split mushroom cap, the ancient figure presents a simian visage with huge ears, wide eyes, and a curved nose and extending lips as though morphing into a snout suggesting zoomorphic transformation. His dilated pupils and broad grin grant the figure with a slightly eerie presence, giving him a hypnotic appearance suggestive of hallucinogenic intoxication. His portly body is dressed in a loincloth with a tied necklace and arm bands as he props up both knees against his bulging belly. Size: 5.6" L x 5" W x 8.4" H (14.2 cm x 12.7 cm x 21.3 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010
