Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase IV to V, ca. 500 to 850 CE. An amusing pottery stirrup vessel in the form of an elder woman with an evocative visage, shown sitting with her head resting on her knee and hand-painted in red and cream pigments. Facing to her right, she holds a lengthy chain of beads in her right hand, which lays at her ankle, and touches her head with her left. Her face presents heavy-lidded eyes, a broad nose, and a projecting mouth, all adorned with incised striations that represent wrinkling folds of flesh, emphasizing her advanced age. A helmet-like coiffure crowns her head, while elongated adornments extend from her ears. The tubular spout of the vessel arches upward from her head and culminates at her hunched back. Size: 6.8" L x 4.1" W x 9.1" H (17.3 cm x 10.4 cm x 23.1 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, before 2010; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, acquired in the 1950s to 1960s
