Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase III to IV, ca. 350 to 700 CE. A mold-made pottery stirrup vessel in the form of a monkey with a projecting head from which protrudes the tubular spout, all adorned in hues of orange and beige. Sitting upon a planar base, the bulbous body of the vessel doubles as the body of the simian, who gazes forth from amygdaloid eyes above a brief snout and an open mouth exposing lengthy fangs. A sizeable pair of ears with huge earspools flanks the animal's head, while a cylindrical handle connects the base of the spout to the shoulder of the vessel. Size: 4.9" Diameter x 9.2" H (12.4 cm x 23.4 cm)
