Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase V, ca. 650 to 850 CE. A fine example of a hand-built pottery vessel with a flat base, a spherical body with a rounded shoulder, a stirrup-shaped handle of a broad, inverted triangular form, and a tapered spout projecting from the top. The highly burnished vessel is first decorated with beige-hued slip and then painted with maroon-hued pigment that creates red stripes along the spout and handle, two registers of large circles with petite interior circles, and stepped, diagonally mirrored triangles. Size: 5.5" W x 9.75" H (14 cm x 24.8 cm)

  • Condition: Repair to area of spout, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Abrasions and nicks to base, body, handle, and spout, with fading and minor darkening to areas of pigment. Nice remains of original pigment and decorative motifs throughout. Old inventory labels beneath base.
