Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Moche, ca. 700 to 800 CE. A charming stirrup vessel decorated with applied figures of spotted deer, one on each side, standing in profile, slip painted in a bichrome finish of red and cream hues. The Moche were innovative ceramicists and used their pottery to represent myriad subjects, among them anthropomorphic forms such as deities, warriors, and rulers, vegetables and plants, zoomorphic forms such as camelids, felines, foxes, bats, monkeys, sea lions, as well as deer as we see in this example. Valued for their speed and grace, deer were associated with stellar symbolism, and frequently featured in Moche and other pre-Columbian creation myths. Size: 5.5" W x 8" H (14 cm x 20.3 cm)

Provenance: private P. Checkowsky collection, Clarkston, Michigan, USA; ex-private collection of Lupita Tovar, a silent screen actress of the 1930s, Belaire, California, USA
