Pre-Columbian, Northern Coast of Peru, Moche, ca. 500 to 800 CE. A charming pottery jar featuring an ovoid body crowned by a flared spout and a row of 4 relief frogs seated on the shoulder, all enveloped in light orange with beige-painted geometric designs. Frogs and toads were viewed as harbingers of the spring season, and the Moche were known to use frogs and toads for extracting strong hallucinogenic drugs. Size: 5.6" Diameter x 7.2" H (14.2 cm x 18.3 cm)
