Description:

North Coast Peru, Moche V, ca. 500 - 700 AD. Redware pottery vessel of a hairless dog chewing a bone (naked dogs like this, known as Viringos, are only depicted in Chimu and Chancay cultures - extremely rare for Moche! And, given the fact that these dogs were originally bred for their meat, it is also rare to find this one almost looking domesticated). Added white pigment to spout and fascial areas. Nice example!8-1/2"H x 9"L x 3-1/2"W.

Provenance: private Hawaii USA collection; Ex-Dr. Fischer Collection Germany before 1980
