Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche I to II, ca. 100 to 300 CE. A superb bichrome pottery stirrup vessel of impressive form and fabulous eagle iconography. The highly burnished vessel is defined by a flat base, a lentoid body adorned with an eagle form in relief, and a stirrup-shaped handle with a lipped spout. Adorning the top of the vessel is a highly stylized eagle with outspread wings and tailfeathers and head in profile. The details are impressive - finely modeled wide-eyed, beaked visage and meticulously rendered plumage. The Moche believed that birds were envoys between humans and the gods, so the broad flight patterns of eagles were thought to represent solar movements and thus imbued them with special powers. An attractive example of high-quality Moche artistry. Size: 5.5" in diameter x 7.45" H (14 cm x 18.9 cm)
