Description:

**Originally Listed At $450**

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 200 CE. A wonderful Moche bi-chrome terracotta stirrup vessel with fineline paintings of a running fox on both sides. The fox presents an animated posture - outstretched with an extended tail and limbs poised to leap upon its prey - as well as an expressive visage - wide-eyed and brandishing alert ears and an open mouth that reveals intimidating teeth and a lagging tongue. In Pre-Columbian Andean cultures, the fox was associated with plant fertility and was seen as the bearer of grains and plants. A wonderful vessel replete with an attractive form and meaningful iconography. Size: 5.375" in diameter x 8.375" H (13.7 cm x 21.3 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950-1960s
