Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Viru Mochica Transition, ca 500 BCE-100 BCE. The Viru culture also known as the Gallinazo was a Pre-Columbian culture that flourished in the Viru Valley on the northwest coast of Peru and extended into the Moche and Santa Valleys. Like most ancient Andean cultures, these people produced masterful ceramics as we see in this example. This bichrome, stirrup vessel depicts a condor, the largest raptor of the Andes. The soaring flight patterns of this bird of prey made it an ideal metaphor for the sun. Its speed, visual acuity, and powerful talons were also models for the successful hunter and warrior. The artistry of this piece is exquisite - form, incised carving, and painted plumes are exquisite!

Provenance: Ex-Dr. Fischer Collection, Germany, collected 1950s-1960s. 8-1/2" H, by 4-1/2" W.
