Description:

Pre-Columbian, Oaxaca, Mexico, Mixtec, ca. 900 to 1200 CE. This endearing, Mixtec polychrome bowl was painted by an ancient artisan who clearly possessed an imaginative eye. The exterior is painted in shades of red, orange, brown, and cream slip. The composition is organized into registers decorated with geometric forms that conjure images from the natural world (perhaps inspired by Mixtec Codex style design) and beneath these, four adorable tadpoles wiggling their way up toward the rim. Size: 3-1/2" x 2" (8.9 x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private Olan collection, California, by family descent, acquired 1960 to 1970.
