Description:

Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Mixtec people, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A group of two long cylindrical, sixteen spherical, and four flat pendant greenstone beads, as well as seventeen large gold/copper alloy spherical beads, and dozens of small round and cylindrical gold/silver alloy beads, all on a modern cord with a modern clasp. At the center of the necklace, which has two hanging strands at its nadir, is an anthropomorphic greenstone pendant, perhaps representing a shaman or a lord. Small votive figures like this pendant seem to have been made specifically to accompany people in the grave. An attractive, eye-catching use of ancient materials to create a wearable necklace! Size of pendant: 1.75" H (4.4 cm); length of necklace: 20" L (50.8 cm)
