Pre-Columbian, South Central Mexico, Mixtec, Postclassic period, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A pair of lustrous blackware examples, one a monkey effigy vessel, the other an endearing bird whistle. The monkey jar depicts a seated simian with slender limbs likely a species of spider monkey, and the pottery surface was highly burnished to achieve the high luster that was probably intended to resemble glassy obsidian stone, a prized material of wealth and status. The bird rests on tripodal feet, with the tail forming the mouthpiece. The whistle functions making a low tone reminiscent of a cooing mourning dove or hooting owl. Size of monkey vessel: 2.95" W x 3.5" H (7.5 cm x 8.9 cm)
Provenance: ex-Harvey Collection, California, USA, acquired prior to 1972
