Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Mixtec to Aztec culture, ca. 1250 to 1521 CE. A superb bowl that is carved from banded agate of translucent green, citrine, beige, tan, and white hues. The tall bowl features a trio of abstract zoomorphic legs with petite eyes and flared nostrils, tall walls surmounted by a thin rim, and a deep basin. Bowls like this were perhaps used for ceremonial or ritual contexts given both the attractiveness and coloration of the stone type as well as the inclusion of the zoomorphic imagery comprising the legs. Size: 7.2" W x 5.75" H (18.3 cm x 14.6 cm)

Cf. a tripod bowl carved from onyx at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 1979.206.363

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Tim Misenhimer collection, Hollywood, California, USA; ex-Ron Messick Gallery, formed between 1960 and 2000
