Description:

North America, modern-day southeastern/midwestern United States, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A thick-walled jar with a long neck and rounded, apple-shaped body. Pottery from this culture was probably made by women who would form clay coils, place them, and smooth the sides of these vessels freehand, without aid from a potter's wheel. They lacked kilns in the sense that we understand them today, and so they placed clay vessels into open flames, which gives their pottery its range of grey, brown, and black fired colors. Size: 4.4" W x 6.9" H (11.2 cm x 17.5 cm)

Provenance: private Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired prior to 1970.
