Description:

North America, Midwest / Eastern United States, Late Prehistoric Mississippian culture, ca. 1400 to 400 BP. A wonderful granite stone fashioned and sanded into a smooth, round-edged disc, known as a discodial or chunkey stone. The piece has shallow wells sanded into its top and bottom, both with a raised outline of a circle at their center. The discoidal - a game piece - of the style known as the "Tennessee double cup," was popular in what is now Tennessee. It was used to play the game of chungke or chunkey which had many different rules and styles of play. Boasting lovely mottled hues of grey, tan, and black, this discodial would have been a treasured item, and could have been used for several generations.
