Description:

New World, American Midwest and Southeast, Mississippian period, ca. 1200 to 1800 CE. A fine example of a rare ceramic type, from the four corners area of Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, and Oklahoma. The body of the vessel is thin, with a smooth finish and beautiful, mysterious incised engravings that wrap sinuously around its center. These appear to depict a serpent-like being with interlocking curves and triangular projections like a crest on the animal's back. Dark red pigment inside the incised lines makes them stand out against the dark brown slip that covers the vessel. The rim bends inward from the shoulder, forming a mouth, with incised bands around it. Caddoan pottery was the finest produced by the Mississippian culture, with very thin walls, intricate motifs, and well-proportioned shapes. Size: 4.9" W x 5.05" H (12.4 cm x 12.8 cm)
