Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Teotihuacan, ca. 200 BCE to 350 CE. A handsome pair of hand-built pottery figures that present as chieftains or lords in ceremonial adornments. Applied loincloths / belts, necklaces, earspools, and headdresses mark them as elite members of society. These are miniature and both can sit in the palm of a hand. Tiny terracotta figures were ubiquitous in the excavation of Teotihuacan, found in all areas of the site, and the earliest - such as this pair- were handmade, often found with the fingerprints of their creators, as the city grew the technique changed and these figures increasingly became mold made. Size: 1.125" L x 2" H (2.9 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: private Golden, Colorado, USA collection, by descent, acquired in Mexico before 1970
