Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A miniature, solid leaded bronze statue of Mercury (Greek Hermes) depicted standing and holding his caduceus against his left shoulder and the money bag - as he is the god of merchants - in his extended right hand. As messenger of the gods, Mercury was a traveler who was never at rest and the wings at the side of his cap or petasos indicate his messenger role. A sweet rendering of this ancient deity! Size: 2.125" H (5.4 cm); 2.875" H (7.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: The Dere Family Collection, New York, USA, assembled 1970s-2000s; ex-Richard Wagner Collection, Massachusetts, USA, acquired in 1970s
