Description:

Rome, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. Figurative bronze pierced as an attachment in the form of Eros / Cupid, the divine child's body endearingly curled upon a rocky outcrop, his wings spread beneath serving as a pillow, his legs splayed in childlike fashion, clutching a tiny cup that rests upon his upraised leg. A simply precious depiction of the son of Aphrodite whose mischievous acts among gods and mortals inspired love. A rendering of a plump baby, so naturalistic in its form and manner with its relaxed pose that it conjures a believable intimacy and a quality of immediacy - all due to the skill and artistry of the ancient artisan. Beyond this, the piece has developed a brilliant deep green patina adding to its beauty! Custom black, wood block mount. Size: the figure itself measures 2-1/2" x 1" x 1" (6.4 x 2.5 x 2.5 cm); with mount 3" x 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" (7.6 x 3.8 x 3.8 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private New York collection; ex-private D.T. collection, Germany, acquired before 1994.
