Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. An endearing pair of cast bronze appliques depicting two horses in profile that are oriented so as to face one another. Both present nice details - ears, openwork eyes, mouth, hooves, and tails - that bring these animals to life. Perforations through the eyes and between tails and buttocks made it possible to attach them to the owner's vestments. Horses signified power and military prowess. In addition, they were symbolic of the god Neptune as well as the Roman legions. A wonderful pair of ancient bronze works with rich green patina. Size: each applique measures ~ 1.875" W x 1.25" H (4.8 cm x 3.2 cm); 1.5" H (3.8 cm) on included custom stand.
