Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A minimalist, cast-bronze figurine of a miniature standing goat. The animal stands atop an integral platform and has a narrow body, a perky tail, and a raised head bearing a pair of conical, backswept horns. The bone-like coloring of the goat is accented by touches of dark brown pigments which accentuate the facial and bodily features. Oxidization has added hues of jade green, giving the goat's surface a more regal presentation. Small animal figurines of the likes may have been models of larger statues that Romans would have seen in public life; they also may have served as votives to be given at temples and placed in altars. The goat was associated with Bacchus, god of wine and nature. Size: 1.5" W x 1.85" H (3.8 cm x 4.7 cm)

Provenance: private San Diego, California, USA collection, acquired from the 1980s to 2000s; ex-Artemis Gallery; ex-Helen Horowitz estate, acquired in Egypt in the 1920s
