Description:

Mexico, Nayarit, Proto-Classic, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This earthenware maquette depicts a miniature house with a group of people inside of it. The ground floor includes a 'room' that was used to store maize and other staples. There is also an open dwelling section where people are sheltered only by an overhang. We see a mother and child under the awning, another figure resting by a dog, and a lone figure huddling by the support. Stairs lead to the upper floor where another mother and child or perhaps a couple rest. The complex with its multiple floors, variations in height, and black geometric and wavy painting is quite informative about the architecture of houses in West Mexico. This model was most likely an offering in a shaft tomb. 6 1/2"W x 4 3/4"D x 5"H Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL: acquired prior to 1970.
