Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Maya to Mixtec, Late to Post Classic Period, ca. 900 to 1450 CE. An intriguing anthropomorphic figure of an abstract, hunched form with compact arms and shoulders, compressed facial features with deep set eyes, and legs tucked beneath the bulky body, all hand-carved from mottled greenstone with beige, orange, and black inclusions. The many representations of hunchbacks have led to the suggestion that hunchback people held positions of importance in the ancient Mesoamerican world. Beginning with Olmec peoples, these individuals were thought to possess special abilities due to their physical anomalies. Size: 1.75" L x 2.3" W x 3.2" H (4.4 cm x 5.8 cm x 8.1 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Howard T. Knapp collection, Connecticut, USA, acquired 1930s and earlier
