Description:

Ancient Near East, Holy Land, Islamic, ca. 8th to 9th century CE. A beautifully preserved mold-formed, blown glass bottle shaped from semi-translucent glass of a pearl-colored hue. The bottle has a concave base with a rough pontil scar, a circular body with four disc-shaped projecting walls, each with a raised boss at its center, a slightly-indented shoulder, and a tall hexagonal mouth. Fine layers of silvery and cream-colored iridescence envelop much of the exterior surface. Size: 1.55" W x 2.1" H (3.9 cm x 5.3 cm)

The style is similar to the "molar" flasks made in contemporary Persia (https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/453264).

  • Condition: Two tiny chips from low on one side; otherwise in excellent condition with light deposits on the surface. A rough pontil scar indicates this vessel was blown by hand while at the same time using a mold. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time.
