Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Inca, ca. 1400 CE - 1550 CE. Incan human figurines carved from the sacred Spondylus shell are far rarer than examples made from silver. Originally the figure would have been wrapped in miniature woven garments and would have accompanied child sacrifices to the gods. Figures such as this example were believed to ritualistically "escort" the sacrificed children, the ancients' most precious offerings to the gods, as they entered the afterlife. A rare and impressive figure of rich bichrome hues (Can we say "wow" over that brilliant red of the Spondylus!) and meticulous craftsmanship - note the detailing of her visage, her hands, not to mention the intricately incised long mane of hair down her back! 4.2 cm high. Custom, museum-quality stand.
