Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A fabulous wheel-thrown miniature amphora with a petite discoid foot, a bulbous body with a slanted shoulder, a flared rim, and a pair of arching, angular strap handles joining rim to body. A register of orange-red meander underscored by linear bands of the same hue is applied atop a lustrous black-glazed body that also presents areas of silvery iridescence to provide a nice complement. A beautiful example from ancient Apulia! Size: 2.625" W handlespan x 2.375" H (6.7 cm x 6 cm)

Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery, named after a vase in Frankfurt (Beazley, EVP, p. 219,1.) that is inscribed with the name: XENON. The type is distinguished by added pale red decoration over black glaze.
