Description:

Ancient Greece, Athens (Attic), ca. 5th century BCE. A wheel-thrown skyphos of miniature form with squat walls forming the deep basin and a pair of parabolic handles arching off the sides, all atop a squat circular foot. Presented on the black-glazed exterior surfaces is a charming owl - with huge eyes, petite beak, and feathered body - who peers outwards from the obverse side, and the opposite side shows the avian creature from the verso with one wing folded atop its back. Size: 4" W x 1.3" H (10.2 cm x 3.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000.

  • Condition: Chipping and abrasions to pigment, with light encrustations, and minor nicks to handles, rim, and foot, otherwise intact and very good. Great remains of pigment and owl motif.
