Description:

Egypt, Ptolemaic period, ca. 332 to 30 BCE. A hand-carved stone sarcophagus of a miniature form, the vertical form representative of an obelisk with a flat base, tall sides, and a tapered point on top. The front of the sarcophagus depicts a simplified effigy of Osiris in low relief, standing in mummiform atop fused legs, and wearing an Atef crown flanked with ostrich feathers atop his head, all accentuated with vermilion-hued pigment. A profile image of Osiris is shown on either side of the body, and the hollow verso would have contained a votive offering, perhaps a petite mummified animal like a shrew. Size: 1.5" W x 3.625" H (3.8 cm x 9.2 cm)
