Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chavin, 900 to 250 BCE. A miniature idol depicting a man, carefully carved from a dark grey/green stone - standing with arms across his chest and hands meeting, presenting a pronounced hunch on his back and looking straight ahead with bold features including large, almond-shaped eyes, a triangular nose, and a slit mouth - all topped by a concave cap with a small receptacle area. Hunchback figures were particularly special in the Pre-Columbian world; according to several scholars, their physical deformities were signs that these individuals had been touched by the deities. Size: 3.125" H (7.9 cm); 4.125" H (10.5 cm) on included custom stand.

The Chavin people lived in the northern Highland Andes, and their capital, Chavin de Huantar, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The artwork of Chavin represents the first widespread visual culture of the Andes.
