Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 900 to 1400 CE. This petite tunic is comprised of tightly woven fiber strands in hues of cream and blue made from camelid wool (llama or alpaca) and cotton threads. The garment has a lower hem opening lined with short tassels, narrow arm openings vertically on the side seams, and the chest area is decorated with parallel lines in blue with a slit opening for a head at the center. The size of the arm and neck openings suggest the wearer was smaller than most infants and was likely a doll. Wooden funerary figures dressed in textiles such as this are often found in tombs, their purpose is unclear, but it is probable they represented family members or servants to accompany the deceased to the afterlife - wearing miniature versions of clothing such as this tunic! Displayed on a fabric-lined cardboard backing in a Riker case, this is a well preserved and exceptional example of traditional weaving and funerary practice! Size (textile): 6.9" L x 6.375" W (17.5 cm x 16.2 cm); (case): 12.125" L x 8.125" W (30.8 cm x 20.6 cm)

For an example of a doll wearing a similar textile, please see the Walters Art Museum website, accession number: 83.768.
