Description:

Ancient Near East, Anatolia, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. A quixotic cast-bronze anthropomorphic idol with a slender body, a pair of outstretched arms as if making an orant gesture, delineated breasts, a low waistline, and slightly separated legs. The figure's face is particularly expressive with wide-open round eyes, a pointy nose, cup-shaped ears, and an ear-to-ear grin - all capped by a conical hat. The meaning and function of ancient Anatolian idols remains an enigma as we have no written records from this era. Also interesting, most ancient idols that have survived were made from marble or stone, so a bronze figure like this example is rare indeed! Size: 2.5" H (6.4 cm); 2.75" H (7 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Expected surface wear commensurate with age and possible old losses to lower legs. Otherwise, the form is well-preserved and some nice details remain. The bronze has also developed a gorgeous green patina.
