East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A ritualistic Sancai pottery sculpture of a chest glazed with green and ochre hues, the top surface is unglazed, probably from something resting on top. The box is replete with side handles, hinges, and a clasp to mimic how storage chests in life would have looked at this time. Miniature pottery offerings known as mingqi were made to replicate furniture, animals, food, and other possessions to be buried with the deceased to use in the afterlife. Size: 5" L x 3" W x 4.75" H (12.7 cm x 7.6 cm x 12.1 cm)
