Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, New Mexico, Mimbres / Mogollon, ca. 900 to 1100 CE. A beautiful pottery bowl constructed using the Puebloan coil-and-scrape technique. The hemispherical vessel is adorned with parallel brown-painted stripes along the interior of the rim as well as with a stylized turkey - with checkered body and fan-shaped tail - in the center of the basin. Dominating the majority of the bird's body is the kill hole. Marking the center is a kill hole which researchers believe was ritually punctured prior to placing the vessel over the face of a deceased individual, perhaps to provide a channel for the spirit to the afterlife while keeping out malevolent forces. Size: 6.3" L x 6" W x 2.9" H (16 cm x 15.2 cm x 7.4 cm)
