Western Africa, Mauritania, Middle Paleolithic, Late Acheulean Period, ca. 200,000 to 50,000 BCE. A beautiful hand axe of an oblong form, hand-knapped from beige-hued jasper with inclusions in hues of caramel and cream. The tool is defined by a thick handle end, sharpened edges, and a tapering point. Stone tools like this example were made by ancient peoples who inhabited this region of the Sahara during a time of favorable climactic conditions. Stone creations from this period demonstrate the skill of the ancient artisans who inhabited this region. Size: 2.5" W x 4.9" H (6.4 cm x 12.4 cm); 5.875" H (14.9 cm) on included custom stand.
