Africa, Southern Africa, Zulu people, ca. mid 20th century CE. A fine, carved-wood headrest of elegant form used to protect intricate coiffures that convey the status, age, and gender of the wearer. Supported by a rectangular base that rises towards the center, the lovely example displays an openwork body of two "x" motifs topped with a concave, curved top upon which one can rest the head. The top boasts a natural wood grain pattern in a warm hue of light brown, while the body and base are painted black and beautifully incised with a tan-filled zigzag pattern along the peripheries of each piece of wood. Size: 11.25" L x 3.5" W x 7" H (28.6 cm x 8.9 cm x 17.8 cm)
